Thousands of Brits unaware they are eligible for £140 discount on energy bills

Thousands of Brits don’t realise that they can claim a £140 discount on their energy bills this winter.

But, there’s a time limit on applications – so you’ll need to check soon.

The Warm Home Discount is an annual scheme which helps more than a million families who may struggle paying their gas and electricity bills.

Colder weather means higher bills after all…

The one-off £140 discount is available to people on some benefits and vulnerable Brits such as pensioners.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) one million retired people have already enrolled because they claim pensions credit.

How do you save money during the winter? let us know in the comments section…

The money will be taken off eligible persons bills by March 2021 – usually pensioners get the discount between now and January.

There are also 220,000 pensioners who are eligible for the discount, but who are not automatically enrolled, are being contacted.

Anyone classed as vulnerable or on a low income can apply, not just OAPs.

There are two categories for those who can get the discount – the core group and the broader group.

People in the core group will have been sent a letter to confirm they can get the discount.

You are eligible for this group if your name, or your partner’s name, is on the bills and you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.

If you think you should be in this group, but haven’t had a letter then call the Warm Home discount helpline.

People in the broader group include those who receive means-tested benefits such as income support, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, income related employment an support allowance and universal credit.

However, your energy supplier must be on the scheme – so check this.

There is a first-come, first-serve, basis for broader group applicants so you should apply ASAP.

Here’s how to apply for the discount:

If you are in the broader group then you need to apply group your provider directly– so contact them to discuss.

Each year you need to re-apply.

If you are a core member you may have automatically been enrolled, if you think you have not then call the DWP’s Warm Home Helpline at 08007310214.

Your discount will be shown on your electricity bill as a Warm Home Discount of £133.33 + VAT.

If you have a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meter then your supplier can tell you how to get the discount – sometimes this takes the form of a voucher.
