What Caused The Walking Dead Zombie Outbreak? Creator Robert Kirkman Has The Answer

It’s been a decade since AMC’s The Walking Dead first started and nearly a year since the comic book’s surprise conclusion with issue #193. Now, after all this time has passed, writer and co-creator Robert Kirkman has revealed what started the zombie apocalypse in his fictional series. Turns out it was aliens all along–well, sort of. What remains to be seen is whether the often-sarcastic Kirkman was joking, as he shared the potential revelation in a two-word tweet that doubles down on something originally shared many years ago.

In responding to a fan on Twitter who asked how the series’ zombies came to be, Kirkman said space had something to do with it. Apparently, a “space spore” is what created the walkers in TWD’s universe.

As GameSpot sister site Comic Book notes, Kirkman and original series artist Tony Moore pitched a continuation to George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, a 1968 horror film in which scientists thought reanimated corpses were caused by a returning space probe’s explosive radiation. Kirkman’s “space spore” answer is likely an homage to Romero’s cult horror classic.

Kirkman’s answer seemingly corroborates previous statements he has given, such as one in 2018 where he said the zombie infection and resulting calamity was because of “a crazy sci-fi thing that would make the story all that much weirder.”

In that same 2018 interview, Kirkman essentially said the zombie apocalypse’s cause matters very little because he doesn’t believe the series’ characters would buy any explanation. “Honestly if a scientist from Washington came to the character and told them what happened the characters would just shrug and say ‘Oh… okay,'” Kirkman said at the time. “It wouldn’t change their lives at all.”

In an interview from 2017, Kirkman said AMC’s The Walking Dead is unlikely to explore a cure for the infectious virus, citing that it “would be a boring show” if everything wrapped up neatly with a cure. So while the comic book has ended, we’ll have to wait and see how the television show continues to handle the walkers. We just got a fresh look at what’s next in the new mid-Season 10 trailers.

70 penguins found dead on Brazilian beaches after being caught in nets

70 penguins are found dead on Brazilian beaches after getting caught in fishing nets during migration

  • 70 Magellanic penguins were discovered on two neighbouring beaches in Brazil
  • R3 Animal Association found the birds on the Santinho and Mocambique beaches
  • One penguin was discovered alive and was taken to a centre for rehabilitation

The bodies of 70 penguins have been discovered on two neighbouring beaches in Brazil after apparently getting caught in fishing nets.

The horrific scene was discovered by the R3 Animal Association on the Santinho and Mocambique beaches in the city of Florianopolis in south-eastern Brazil.

R3 Animal Association are one of the institutions which carry out the Monitoring Project of the Santos Basin Beaches.

70 dead Magellanic penguins were discovered washed up on two neighbouring beaches, Santinho and Mocambique, in south-eastern Brazil

The horrific scene was discovered by the R3 Animal Association which carry out the Monitoring Project of the Santos Basin Beaches

They said: ‘We monitor the beaches on the island [of Santa Catarina where Florianopolis is located] in search of dead or weak marine animals.

‘The dead animals undergo examination to determine the cause of death, and the living animals are rehabilitated before being released.’

The beach monitoring is monitored because of an environmental requirement enforced when licensing was given for the exploration of possible oil and gas reserves in the Santos Basin.

Marks on the flippers of some of the Magellanic penguins and the fragment of a fishing net still attached to one of the penguins led to the belief that the birds were killed after getting caught in the netting.

All 70 birds have been taken to the Centre of research, Rehabilitations and Depetrolisation of Marine Animals for an autopsy.

Vet Janaina Rocha Lorenco said that preliminary analysis shows a lack of feathers on the birds’ flippers, generalised congestion and other signs point to the penguins potentially having bee trapped in fishing nets and trying to free themselves.

One penguin was discovered by a team on Mocambique beach and has been taken to a centre for rehabilitation.

Magellanic penguins are often seen in the area at this time of year as they migrate from Patagonia in southern Argentina.

One man is dead and another wounded after Seattle CHOP zone shooting

One man is dead and another wounded following a gun battle in Seattle’s CHOP zone after the two men ‘plowed their jeep into the area and started shooting but armed protesters fired back’

  • Police said the deadly shooting unfolded just before dawn on Monday in Seattle’s CHOP, or Capitol Hill Organized Protest, zone
  • Witnesses say the men plowed their white Jeep into the zone and opened fire on the protesters
  • Those acting as CHOP security returned fire and struck both the driver and passengers, according to witnesses
  • One of the wounded men was taken to hospital in a private vehicle and the second man was brought in by Seattle Fire Department medics
  • The man brought in by medics died several hours later and the other remains in a critical condition

One man has been killed and another wounded following a gun battle inside Seattle’s CHOP zone after witnesses say the two men drove into the area and started shooting but protesters returned fire.

Police said the deadly shooting unfolded just before dawn on Monday in the city’s Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP) zone.

One of the wounded men was brought to the Harborview Medical Center at about 3.15am in a private vehicle before the second man was brought in about 15 minutes later by Seattle Fire Department medics.

The man brought in by medics died several hours later and the other remains in a critical condition.

One of the victims had gunshot wounds to his hip, arm and temple.

Seattle police have not released any further details of the shooting.

The two men have not publicly been identified.

Witnesses say the gun battle unfolded after the two men plowed their white Jeep Cherokee into the CHOP zone before opening fire on protesters.

‘The protesters responded quickly with CHOP security returning fire hitting both the driver and passenger in the front seat,’ a CHOP member, only known as Stitch, told DailyMail.com.

‘I’m not certain if anyone else was hit by gunfire, there were bullets flying all over the place.’

According to another eye witness who refused to give his name, police responded and did a cursory investigation before quickly leaving the scene.

The blood-soaked and bullet-ridden jeep remained at the scene Monday morning.

It is the fourth shooting in, or near, the CHOP zone in nine days.

Members of CHOP security openly carry around pistols and other weapons. One member has been seen brandishing an AK-47.

In a previous fatal shooting in the zone, a 19-year-old man was killed on June 20 and a 33-year-old man was wounded.

Demonstrators have occupied several blocks around the Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct and a park for about two weeks after police abandoned the precinct following standoffs and clashes with protesters calling for racial justice and an end to police brutality.

The encampment is hailed by its supporters as an ‘ideal society’ where people help each other with food and medical care, but it has been derided by President Donald Trump as the home of ‘thugs and anarchists’.

He has threatened to dismantle the zone with the help of federal forces.

The city of Seattle and Mayor Jenny Durkan made efforts to dismantle the CHOP last week.

Officials had to turn back when a protester laid down in the street to block Seattle Department of Transportation crews and heavy machinery from removing barricades around the occupied zone.

Since then, negotiations between city leadership and organizers have broken down and hundreds of protesters have said they will not leave the area until their demands have been met.

The encampment has become more difficult to manage, drawing violence and a large homeless population since the onset of the occupation three weeks ago.

Nearby businesses and property owners filed a federal lawsuit against the city last Wednesday for its tolerance of the zone, saying officials had been complicit in depriving them of their rights to their property.

The businesses said they did not intend to undermine the anti-police-brutality or Black Lives Matter messaging of the protest but said they had limited access to their businesses.

They said they’ve sometimes been threatened for photographing protesters in public areas or for cleaning graffiti off their storefronts.

President Donald Trump has previously slammed the protesters and local lawmakers, telling Fox News last week: ‘If they don’t do something with Seattle, we’re going to do that – we’re going to go in there.

‘Because what’s happening, they’re taking over American cities. In all cases, it’s Democrats. They’re Democrat-run, in all cases.’

Trump also tweeted: ‘When are the thugs, looters, and anarchists moving out of the so-called “Autonomous Zone” in Seattle? Get going!’.

A husky dog was gunned down in front of its owner after a wild goose chase in an animal cruelty case which has caused outrage in Russia.

Blue-eyed pet Archie was on a walk with his owner when the dog vanished for a few minutes.

Irate hunter Oleg Potapov, 41, then appeared claiming the husky had ‘stolen’ his wild goose prey from a flooded former quarry in Chelyabinsk.

Dog-owner Ekaterina Mokhrova and her friend Marina Matveicheva froze as the hunter shouted: ‘Not a step closer or I shoot you.’

Then Potapov was caught on camera gunning down Archie with three shots as one of the women filmed the macabre scene.

Potapov, who then fled, was later detained cowering in a toilet after the women reported the brutal shooting to police.

He now faces up to three years in jail amid an outcry over the incident and a call to toughen Russia’s animal cruelty laws, say reports.

Prominent Russian vet Karen Dallakyan said the man should face action for brandishing a gun close to a residential area as well as the ‘very cruel’ shooting of Archie.

‘Husky dogs never show aggression….this killer should never pick up weapons again,’ he said.

MP Vladimir Burmatov called for other charges to be made against the man over the shooting and threats to the women.

‘He tried to hide in the toilet,’ he said.

‘After he was found by security guards, he tried to escape, but was caught and disarmed…

‘The killer must be punished.’

Potapov told police that he was attacked by the dog before shooting him, but animal rights campaigners stress the video makes clear the dog showed no aggression to the hunter.’

Shooting geese is illegal at this time of year.

Three dead and one person left permanently blind after DRINKING hand sanitizer in New Mexico – The Sun

THREE people have died, one person is permanently blind and three others are in a critical condition after guzzling hand sanitizer containing methanol, say New Mexico health bosses.

The US Food and Drug Administration recently warned consumers not to use nine brands of sanitizers that contained up to 81 per cent methanol.

It's not clear what brands were ingested by those who died or ended up in intensive care in New Mexico.

However, the health department confirmed that the cases were related to alcoholism.

The state Department of Health said the cases have been gradually reported to the New Mexico Poison Control Center since early May.

"All seven people are believed to have drunk hand sanitizer containing methanol," said the department.

Brandon Warrick, an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico who is an expert on medical toxicology and addiction, told The New York Times that it was the largest number of methanol poisoning cases he was aware of.

Sales of hand sanitizer around the world have rocketed during the coronavirus pandemic.

Health officials have warned against ingesting the liquid cleaner, explaining that drinking those containing methanol may result in poisoning.

Methanol can cause kidney damage, blindness and death as it's a toxic form of alcohol.

It can be deadly when inhaled, applied topically or ingested.

'SEEK URGENT HELP'

State Health Secretary Kathy Kunkel said: “If you think you may have used or consumed hand sanitizer containing methanol, please seek medical care.

“An antidote to methanol poisoning is available, but the earlier someone gets treated for methanol poisoning the better the chance of recovery.”

Authorities have noted that people with substance abuse issues, particularly within the homeless community, have been known to use sanitizer and other products as a substitute for alcohol and liquor.

The FDA says that methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used due to its toxic effects.

On June 17, the agency said that it "contacted Eskbiochem to recommend the company remove its hand sanitizer products from the market due to the risks associated with methanol poisoning".

It also "advises consumers not to use any hand sanitizer manufactured by Eskbiochem SA de CV in Mexico, due to the potential presence of methanol (wood alcohol), a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested".

However, it did not say whether its products had been linked to any hospitalizations.

One of the firm's sanitizers contained "81 per cent ethanol", the agency said.

The FDA warned that "substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headaches, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.

"Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning."

One-year-old boy shot dead in car seat on way to laundromat with mom

A BABY boy was fatally shot in the chest while on a trip home from a Chicago laundromat with his mom.

The child’s mother, 22, drove him to St. Bernard Hospital where the 20-month-old was pronounced dead, say cops.

Chicago police Chief Fred Waller told reporters that the pair were traveling through the city’s South Side on Saturday afternoon when the baby was shot once in the chest while in his car seat.

He said the fatal shooting occurred after 2pm when the mom was heading south on Halsted Street near 60th Street, on her way home from the laundromat.

Her baby was sitting in a child seat in the back of the car.

Suddenly, another vehicle pulled up alongside them, and someone inside that car started firing at them.

Tragically, the baby received a bullet to his chest, while the mother’s head was grazed with another bullet, Waller explained.

NBC Chicago reports that the injured woman was later transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.

The baby's shocking death comes days after 14 people, including five children, were killed as more than 100 people were shot in a wave of gunfire in Chicago over the Father’s Day weekend.

Among those victims was three-year-old Mekhi James, who police said was fatally shot as the boy was in a car with his dad in the south Austin neighborhood.

Police said the child’s 27-year-old father was the intended target when someone fired shots at the vehicle.

Waller said: “It seems like just yesterday – it was actually last Saturday, I was in front of you all talking about a three-year-old that was killed in the Austin community, and now here in Englewood, a 20-month-old was killed.

“This is happening far too often.

“Too many times children are killed by senseless violence, and not only just children, but grown-ups also.

“When is this going to stop? When are we going to say enough is enough?”

CBS Chicago reports that Pastor Donovan Price visited the baby’s mom and dad to offer comfort and prayers.

Heartbroken for the devastated parents, he later tweeted: “A one year old has been shot and killed.

“I really wish I had something to say…when I got ready to leave to go to this shooting I took a towel with me.

“I didn't expect to be filled with the blood of the mother of this 1 year old and to hold her and the father and feel their level of pain.

“This is one of if not the first time that I just want to sit on the curb and cry."

Waller said that an initial investigation suggested the shooting wasn't random.

He told reporters a weapon hasn't been recovered as yet, but it's assumed the killer used a handgun, based on evidence found at the scene.

'PAIN NEVER GOES'

Waller added: “No doubt we’ll catch the person who did it.

"We’ll catch the person who killed that three-year-old [over the Father's Day weekend].

"We’ll catch the person who killed this kid.

"But that’s not going to bring that kid back, and that’s not going to satisfy that family."

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot tweeted: "The pain of losing a child never goes away.

"Today, we lost more young people to the gun violence epidemic: a 17-year-old in Humboldt Park and a 1-year-old in Englewood.

"As a mother, I am tired of the funerals. I am tired of burying our children."

Ex-mayoral candidate and civil rights advocate Ja’Mal Green tweeted that he is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman who killed the baby.

Urging those who know the shooter to “speak up, the code has been broken”, he added: "My youngest is 1 years old.

"I couldn’t imagine this happening to my kids.

“I’m hurt. Very very hurt."

Walmart shooting – Two dead and four hurt after man with ‘AR-weapon’ rams into distribution center and opens fire – The Sun

A SHOOTER wielding an AR-type weapon reportedly rammed his vehicle into a Walmart building and opened fire today, leaving two dead and four hurt.

Police shot the suspect in the chest after he sprayed bullets at the distribution center in Red Bluff, Tehama County, California, at around 3.30pm.

The alleged attacker had shot at officers multiple times before he was gunned down, cops say. His current condition is unknown.

The shooter appears to have smashed his vehicle in the building, causing a small fire, before going on a deadly rampage.

Officials confirmed two were killed and four were injured in the carnage.

The wounded have been taken to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff where they are said to be in fair condition.

At least one person was hit by a car, KCRA 3’s affiliate Action News Now reported.

Walmart officials released the following statement on the investigation: "We aware of the situation and are working with law enforcement to assist as they investigate. Our immediate focus is supporting our associates in the area."

There were about 200 workers inside the facility, some of whom locked themselves in a room , employees at the center told the KHSL TV station.

Scott Thammakhanty, an employee at the facility’s receiving center, said he heard the shooter fire from a semi-automatic weapon.

“It went on and on — I don’t even know how many times he fired,” Thammakhanty said. “I just know it was a lot.”

Thammakhanty and others started running for their lives, and he saw people lying on the ground as he went, he said.

Thammakhanty told the newspaper that he didn’t know his identity.

Fellow employee Franklin Lister, 51, told the New York Times he had just started work when a coworker ran down the hallway shouting: “Active gunfire! Active shooter!”

Vince Krick told the Record-Searchlight that his wife and son work at the facility.

They weren’t hurt, but Krick was waiting at the distribution center to be reunited with them.

“It was real crazy, because, you know, you can’t do nothing,” Krick said.

Krick was on the way to pick up his wife when he saw the flames, he said. His wife texted that she was OK, but told him not to come to the front entrance, the newspaper reported.

Dispatchers told the Record-Searchlight that at least one woman had been shot. A man had also reported his leg getting run over when the shooter rammed a vehicle into the store, but the man wasn’t sure whether he’d been shot, dispatchers said.

Walmart spokesman Scott Pope told the Record-Searchlight that the company is “aware of the situation” and working with law enforcement.

“We don’t have any additional information to share at this time,” Pope said.

Red Bluff is a city of about 14,000 people about 131 miles (210 kilometers) north of Sacramento, California.

Kim Jong-un dead rumours – North Korea’s World War III-mongering ‘just a bid to cover-up tyrant’s perilous health'

NORTH Korea's belligerence towards the South could be an attempt to distract from Kim Jong-un's poor health and other problems in the country, Japan's foreign minister has said.

Recent weeks have seen tensions escalating on the Korean peninsula as well as the relative absence of Kim from public view.

The dictator disappeared for three weeks in April before briefly resurfacing, and currently has not been since a meeting with senior officials on June 7.

Speculation has swirled about the possible reasons for his withdrawal, with reports earlier suggesting he had undergone a botched heart operation after collapsing while on a walk.

Speaking at a press briefing at Tokyo's Japanese Foreign Correspondents Club, foreign minister Taro Kono said the latest escalations may be intended to “take the attention of North Korean people away from Kim Jong Un’s health".

"We have some suspicion about his health,” he said.

He went on to say it was thought Kim is taking extra precautions to guard himself during the coronavirus pandemic.

North Korea has so far claimed not to have seen a single case of the virus, but analysts have raised doubts about whether the country could have remained unaffected.

“We suspect that COVID-19 is spreading around North Korea… and Kim Jong Un is trying to… not [be] infected,” Kono said.

“So sometimes he doesn’t come [out] in public.”

SITUATION INSIDE NORTH KOREA 'BAD'

The recent belligerence from the North has included the blowing up of a jointly run Inter-Korean Liaison Office, which previously served as neutral ground for negotiations in the absence of formal embassies.

Among the lines of communication maintained by the office were hotlines between senior figures within the countries' militaries as well as their presidential offices.

The North has also repeatedly threatened to move its military in the demilitarised zone, a 2.5-mile strip of territory separating the two countries.

North Korea was also threatening "military action" until Wednesday of this week, when state media claimed the action had been called off following an assessment of the "prevailing situation".

Satellite images had earlier shown an unusually high number of what were thought to be fighter jets parked on a runway at Wonsan-Kalma International Airport on the country's east coast.

Kono said other explanations for the recent belligerence included the "bad harvest or the bad economy".

"The harvest last year in North Korea wasn’t quite good – bad, actually," he said.

The North Korean economy is known to have been badly impacted by heavy international sanctions intended to stop the country pursuing a nuclear weapons programme.

Theo Foley dead at 83: Tributes paid to Arsenal legend and assistant during historic Anfield 89 title win – The Sun

TRIBUTES have been paid to former Arsenal assistant coach Theo Foley, who has died at the age of 83.

The Irishman enjoyed a successful playing career, most notably with Northampton, before taking up backroom roles at a number of clubs.

Fondly remembered for his time working under George Graham at Highbury, Foley described their 1989 title triumph at Liverpool as the "pinnacle" of his career.

Born in April 1937, Foley played for Home Farm and Exeter before making his name at Northampton.

The defender helped win two promotions as the Cobblers ascended to the First Division in 1965 for their only campaign in the top-flight.

Running a chicken shop to supplement his income, Foley left for Charlton but took to coaching after struggling with a knee injury, spending a total of seven years at The Valley.

A stint at Millwall and then QPR united the former Republic of Ireland international with George Graham, who he followed to Arsenal in 1986.

And Foley was on the touchline as Michael Thomas struck his iconic late title clincher at Anfield to snatch Arsenal's first league crown in 18 years.

After his passing was announced on Friday, tributes flooded in for the 83-year-old.

Ex-Gunners striker Kevin Campbell wrote: "I am totally shocked and saddened at the passing of Theo Foley. What a special football man and gentleman he was! He helped me so much behind the scenes at The Arsenal and always was a pleasure to be around. R.I.P. Theo Foley."

The Gooner Fanzine tweeted: "Deeply saddened to hear the news that Theo Foley, George Graham's assistant when Arsenal won their first title for 18 seasons back in 1989, has passed away. A good guy by all accounts. R.I.P."

Arsenal photographer Stuart MacFarlane wrote: "So sad to hear that Theo Foley has passed away, a lovely guy and a real football man."

I’m not envious of anyone at all because the life I have had, I wouldn’t swap for the world."

Northampton released a statement that read: "Northampton Town Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Cobbler Theo Foley.

"We send our condolences and best wishes to Theo’s Family and friends."

A Charlton statement added: "The club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Charlton player and manager Theo Foley at the age of 83."

Addicks fans' group AFC Charlton tweeted: "We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of CAFC legend Theo Foley. Several of us here had the privilege to meet Theo and he was always a gentleman, full of joy and life. He will be sorely missed."

After Arsenal, the Dubliner managed Northampton before coaching roles at Fulham and Southend and further stints with Graham at Leeds and Tottenham.

In October 2018, Foley released an autobiography entitled Theo Give Us A Ball: A Life in Football.

After the book's release, he told London Football Scene: "I’m not envious of anyone at all because the life I have had, I wouldn’t swap for the world."
