Samantha Giles has admitted that she was expecting a better exit storyline for her popular character Bernice Blackstock, after she left Emmerdale for Australia to look after her daughter Dee Dee.
She left last year after her latest stint and his indicated that it will be her last – adding that she was disappointed with the way she went and felt it would have been a better exit for the character if she had been killed off.
Speaking to Inside Soap, she explained: ‘If she had been killed, perhaps I’d have got a better exit story, as it was a little disappointing.
‘I had quite a lot of people on Twitter saying that they felt a bit cheated by the way Bernice left, but it’s done now. You can’t please everyone!’
But Samantha has moved on for her role and focusing on very different characters now – ones of her own creation.
While still working on Emmerdale, the mum-of-two was writing her first children’s novel, Rosemary And The Witches Of Pendle Hill. It has been three years in the making, and She had almost given up hope of finding a publisher.
She enthused: ‘All of a sudden, in the middle of lockdown, I get this amazing email to say that Aurora Books loved it – and wants to publish this summer. I was just in shock really, and I burst into tears!
‘I love creating new characters – and I guess that comes back to the reason why I had to leave Bernice behind.
‘The kids in the book are based on my real-life kids, and they are delighted. I don’t know if my younger one will be that thrilled when she gets older, though, as her character is a little farter!’
